Eger - Szépasszonyvölgy
History - Beauty - Wine tasting

Eger is ideal for those wishing to escape the big city vibe of the capital.
With plenty things to see, today's Eger was formed in the 10th century by St. Stephen (997–1038), the first Christian king of Hungary, who founded an episcopal see here. The first cathedral was built on Castle Hill, within the present site of the Castle. Eger grew up around its former cathedral and has remained a religious centre in Hungary since its foundation.
The town and the surrounding region is well-known for its wines. For over 1000 years the population of the region has produced grapes and excellent wines, such as Egri Bikavér (Bull's Blood) which has long been Hungary's most recognized red wine. The famous white wines of the region are based on local varieties, like Egri Leányka, Olaszrizling, and Debrői Hárslevelű. The oldest wine-cellars are more than 400 years old in the Valley of the Beautiful Woman (Szépasszonyvölgy), where our wine tasting and lunch will be.

Eger and the Valley of the Beautiful Woman:

The city of Eger remains a historic key in every-day common knowledge, primarily because the town was the scene of the honorable battle with the Turks in 1552, symbolizing national heroism and patriotism. However, this is not the only reason why the town with a millenar history worth to be highlighted for. The baroque style downtown was built in the 1800s by the highly cultural Archbishops of Eger, whose ideas were attained with the best architects and professionals. The historical importance and the wine culture melted together over the centuries. The world famous vine producing region developed alongside the slope of the Bükk Mountains. Our winemakers are proud of their traditional varieties works. Eger also ranks in the top place in Hungary when it comes to the thermal bath culture it has to offer. We can find authentic Turkish bath, which awaits for its visitors with 6 pools and a high variety of wellness opportunities. One of the country’s most beautiful indoor swimming pool is also located in Eger.
There is no other settlement in Hungary where there are so many underground tunnels, cellars, like in Eger. It is good to know that these cellars were not made at the same time, with the same purpose. There are cellars that were cut for storing wine, were used for defense purposes, while the buildings of the Baroque city centre were partly built from tuff blocks ectracted from below the surface. The length of the cellar system below Eger is 130 km, and the best rows of cellars having the best atmosphere are undoubtedly in Szépasszony-valley (Valley of the Beautiful Woman).
