Szentendre
Artist's Village

Szentendre, one of our baroque gems, is a cute little town just 20 km from Budapest.
This "artists village" is symbolized by churches, museums, galleries and cafés. Serbians fleeing from the Turkish occupation settled here in the 17th century in large numbers, Greeks and Slovaks also found shelter here, giving the city its Mediterranean character, which was preserved to this day. The architecture, cobblestone streets and the city's picturesque location have attracted many artists throughout the years. There are several small art museums and galleries, like microscopical wonders, or martipan figures.

Szentendre:

The city’s bucolic setting and its architecture—a melange of late baroque, neo-classical and rococo—proved irresistible to many of the country’s major artists. So if they weren’t born in Szentendre, they managed to live there for various lengths of time and the town became an artists colony. Several of these artists’ works are showcased in museums established in their honor and the works of the best of living local artists (about 100 artists currently have studios in Szentendre) are exhibited in the city’s galleries. Those that specialize in local crafts feature hand-embroidered tablecloths and pillowcases, sheepskin vests, textiles, glassware and ceramics. For Hungaricum (Hungarian food and beverage specialities pop in the Paprika Ház in downtown Szentendre where you can buy Tokaji wine, pálinka (Hungarian fruit brandy, Hungarian paprika powder, and goose liver. Among Szentendre’s larger architectural treasures, the churches reflect the city’s wealth during its merchant days. Some may ask why they have an orthodox cathedral in a town full of catholics? It’s because before the 20th century Serbs were the majority here.
